Revealing how Google’s Nearby Unlock feature works to unlock the phone through a smart watch

A few months ago at CES 2022, Google announced that it would help users unlock their smartphones through Wear OS-based smartwatches. Some time later, the code of this feature called Smart Unlock was seen in the beta version of Google Play Services. At that time, an image of the settings screen was also leaked, which had new information about the Smart Unlock feature. Now, one of the whistleblowers on Twitter has recently provided new details.

Mishal Rahman writes on Twitter that while checking the new Google Play Services beta code, he noticed that the Smart Unlock feature has now been renamed to Nearby Unlock . In his tweet, he has also published an animated video that shows how the Nearby Unlock feature works:

Reporting PhoneArena, In order to use Nearby Unlock, you must first unlock the smart watch. Then, by bringing the watch closer to the phone, the device will be unlocked. After the phone is unlocked, you will see a notification on the watch that you can tap to lock the phone again. It will be possible to enable or disable Nearby Unlock through the phone settings menu.

Nearby Unlock feature will probably come this fall at the same time as Pixel Watch becomes available. Only watches running Wear OS 3 are expected to support this feature.

Previous Samsung is likely to produce 80 million OLED panels for the iPhone 14
Next Poco X4 GT and F4 come with 144Hz and 120Hz displays respectively and support 67W charging.
