Introducing the M1 Ultra – Apple’s new flagship chip with 114 billion transistors

News unit EMGblog.com : Company Apple on Tuesday, March 8 of this year (March 17, 1400) simultaneously with the introduction of the new generation iPad Air 2022 and iPhone SE 2022 during the Peak Performance 2022 event, from its newest chip named M1 Ultra unveiled; the chipset, which according to Apple, is the last member of the M1 family, and before this processors M1 Pro, M1 and M1 Max. M1 Ultra is considered the most powerful chip of the Cupertino giant and is based on the architecture of ARM processors with the purpose of being used in the company’s Mac Studio computer (at least in the first place), which was also introduced at this event.

Apple released the M1 chip in November 2020; An eight-core chip that was first used in products such as Mac mini, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, and then in iMac and tablets iPad Pro was used and it marked the first steps of the American giant to become independent from Intel chips. Apple continues this trend with more powerful 5nm chips M1 Pro and M1 Max continued in October 2021. Products with up to 10 processing cores, a graphics processor with up to 32 cores and support for 32 GB of integrated memory in M1 Pro and 64 GB in M1 Max (unlike M1, which was 16 GB), which is used in the first step in MacBook Pros 14 and 16 inches. were placed

The M1 Ultra chipset, having 114 billion transistors, is actually a combination of two M1 Max chips that are connected to each other through a connection point called UltraFusion. In this connection, an electronic interface or silicon interposer is used, which gives a bandwidth of 2.5 terabytes per second. In this way, connecting two chipsets through an electronic interface reduces concerns related to bandwidth and delay in information processing compared to using two separate chips connected to each other through a motherboard.

As mentioned, the chip Apple’s new one consists of two M1 Max chips. As a result, the number of GPU, CPU and neural processor cores has been doubled and now we see the presence of a CPU with 20 processing cores, a 64-core graphics processing unit and a neural processing engine with 32 cores for artificial intelligence and machine learning operations in the new chipset. It should be said that the 20 CPU cores in this chip include 16 more powerful cores with higher performance and 4 low-power cores. According to Apple, the new chip is eight times faster compared to the M1. In addition, the M1 Ultra offers 90% higher performance compared to 16-core PC processors such as the Intel Core i9-12900K with the same power consumption, and can even reach the maximum performance of the Intel chip with 100W less power consumption. Also, Apple’s new chipset appears much stronger than Intel’s 12900K in terms of multi-thread applications; Although Apple has not specified exactly what applications it intends.

On the other hand, the M1 Ultra’s 64-core GPU has low power consumption, so that it can reach the peak performance of today’s most advanced GPUs, such as GeForce RTX, using 200 watts less power. 3090 Nvidia products and still perform better. Of course, Apple has not released any information about what type of operation these figures were recorded during. .

Experts predict that Apple will introduce M2 Pros and M2 Max chips in the near future slow and stay faithful to this naming framework for its production chipsets.
