In an exciting news yesterday, Google confirmed that both of the company’s new phones have a custom-designed hidden chip. This dedicated chip, which is called Pixel Visual Core, is primarily designed to help the Pixel 2’s powerful camera, and once activated, it can perform some take over the activities of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon.

In the coming weeks and months, Google will officially enable the Pixel Visual Core chip, and thanks to it, the+HDR /strong> More third-party camera apps are coming to the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. Pixel Visual Core : Image processing and machine learning in Pixel 2

The camera used in the new Pixel 2 phone is an excellent combination of hardware, software and machine learning; All you have to do is select the scene you want and start capturing amazing pictures and videos. One of the technologies that will help you capture great images is a feature called HDR+; This feature enables capturing great images of various scenes (from dimly lit landscapes to sunny skies) with high brightness levels.

HDR Plus images It produces beauty and we have been able to evolve its algorithm over the last year and thanks to this, we have found the ability to use the new Pixel 2 chip to enable it and allow our users to take advantage of the processing. Smart HDR+ can record multiple images consecutively in the background. Along with this, we’ve been working on features for some time that will significantly increase the computing power of this chip and enable bringing HDR+ to third-party camera applications.

In order to make HDR+ even more accessible, to tackle the most challenging imaging and machine learning applications, and finally, to provide lower latency and even higher HDR+ performance, we created Pixel Visual Core. Pixel Visual Core is the first custom SoC made by Google and is included inside all Pixel 2 phones. We’ll be enabling this chip in a software update over the next few months, and thanks to it, third-party camera apps will be able to use the Pixel 2’s default camera app’s HDR+ feature.

By using Pixel Visual Core, the HDR+ feature runs up to 5 times faster. On the other hand, the energy consumption of this new chip is less than one-tenth of that of the Snapdragon 835 used in this year’s flagships when using HDR+. It is an Application Processor (AP) implementation. An important element in the Pixel 2 to make this IPU more efficient is that the hardware and software are perfectly paired together. Our processor has an advantage over conventional processors, and that is more control over the hardware of the device, which makes it more efficient. This, on the other hand, can make IPU a challenge to use today’s well-known programming languages.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be enabling Pixel Visual Core in the Android 8.1 Developer Preview. After that, we’ll enable the chip for all third-party apps that use the phone’s main camera, allowing them to access the Google Pixel 2’s HDR+ technology.
