Apple’s increased investment in the Corning company and speculation about the possibility of the release of bendable iPhones by 2023
Advanced Manufacturing Fund Apple to help US manufacturers, It works in the form of initial purchase order and investment. For example, Apple recently announced a $410 million investment in II-VI, a manufacturer of VCSEL lasers, which is one of the main components of the TrueDepth camera system and Face ID.
The Corning company produces glass for a wide range of Apple products, including the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, and the cooperation between the two companies goes back many years. As you know, the first iPhone phones were presented with a plastic screen, but Steve Jobs found that the prototypes of this product were easily scratched when placed in the pocket. Therefore, a few months after the release of the iPhone in June 2007, Apple entered into a partnership with Corning to produce the famous Gorilla Glass protector and use it instead of the plastic covering of the iPhone screen. Since then, all iPhone models have been equipped with different versions of this protective glass.
Last year, Apple and Corning in the field of Ceramic Shield technology and its use in iPhone 12 have partnered with what Apple says is the “toughest” protective coating available for smartphones, protecting the company’s newest flagship from damage caused by Falling provides four times more protection. Of course, Corning’s Gorilla Glass is used in a wide range of Android devices, including Galaxy S21 Ultra product Samsung are also used.
Jeff Williams, chief operating officer of Apple, has spoken about the long-term cooperation with Corning in this regard. According to him, “Apple and Corning have a long history of working together and trying to make the impossible possible [and] from the first examples of iPhone glass to the revolutionary Ceramic Shield [design] on the iPhone 12, this collaboration has led to a change in the landscape of design and durability of smartphone covers. . Ceramic Shield is a prime example of technologies made possible by the deep innovation and manufacturing power of American companies. We are proud to partner with Corning; A company whose 170-year legacy is a testament to the ingenuity of the workforce in the United States.” Of course, it is not exactly clear whether the provision of Ceramic Shield by Corning is an exclusive deal with Apple or the result of its research will be available to other phone manufacturers in the future; However, in the press release of Apple, it is pointed out that this ceramic shield was the result of cooperation between Apple and Corning experts.
Apple has not specified exactly how Corning will use this 45 million dollar investment. But the timing of this investment with speculations about Apple’s efforts to release bendable iPhones by 2023 has raised the possibility of a connection between the two. As before in 2019, news was published about the production of flexible glass samples by Corning, and last February, the company announced the possibility of introducing this technology on smartphones within the next 12 to 18 months. If successful, this protective glass could make bendable smartphones more durable, removing them from the plastic protective layer, like in the latest folding products Samsung is visible, make unnecessary.
