Apple invests $390 million to develop depth detection chips

Apple made its second largest investment after investing 1 billion dollars in May last month. Finisar, a Californian company active in the field of optical components, has received $390 million from Apple to spend on research and development. The money will also be used to produce Vertical Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs), which are essentially the same depth and proximity detection chips used in Apple products. This company uses VCSELs technology in Face ID technology, portrait, Animoji selfie modes of iPhone 10 as well as Airpod proximity detection.

Finisar and Lumentum companies were said to be the two main VCSEL manufacturers for iPhone 10’s TrueDepth camera. The problems related to the timely delivery of production components is one of the main reasons for the delay in the iPhone 10 release.

By receiving this capital, Finisar can expand its 6,5032 square meter (700,000 square foot) production plant in the year 2012 was closed, reopened. Apple expects the facility, located in Sherman, Texas, to become a VCSEL production center. The facility could create 500 new jobs and pay a total of $65 million with other nearby Finisar plants. Apple also predicts that this new factory will be able to produce VCSELs by the end of 2018.

Apple CEO Jeff Williams said in a press release:

VCSELs are in many of the most complex technologies we’ve ever produced. there are; And we are excited to be working with Finisar for the next few years to expand the boundaries of VCSEL technology and its applications. Goodness of technology depends on the people who produce it; And Finisar is a company with a long history of supporting their personnel and communities.

Last May, Apple provided Corning with 200 million capital to develop new glass for future products. This company will be paid. As it seems, Apple’s future devices will be different than before.
