AMD Ryzen 5 1600 or Intel Core i7-7800X: Which is better for gaming?
With the introduction of new products by two Intel and AMD companies, the competition in various fields has heated up. One of these fields is computer games, which are a priority for many computer users. In this article, 30 games have been tested using graphic card GTX 1080 Ti at 1080p resolution.
For R5 1600 and i7 7800X processors from DDR4 RAMs with a frequency of 3200 MHz are used; However, 32 GB of RAM is used on the Intel system and 16 GB of RAM on the AMD system. Note that this difference should not affect performance. Of course, we have a compelling reason for this: we currently do not have a 32 GB kit with a frequency of 3200 MHz and compatible with Ryzen series.
As you know, the price of the 7800X processor is $415 (at the time of presentation, It was for 390 dollars). While the 1600 can be purchased at almost half the cost of the 7800X at $215. Of course, the AMD platform is still cheaper compared to Intel. The specifications of the tested systems are shown in the table below.

The game World of tanks, is not an important title for the game, but because a wide range of Covering games, we also reviewed this game. Note that this game is limited to 120 frame rate. The 1600 achieved an average of 118 frames per second, which is several frames higher than its competitor.
As you can see, the R5 1600 has good results. It should be noted that this game is locked at 144 frames. In this game, the 1600 has better results than the 7800X.
Witcher3 is one of the popular games for gamers. Both processors are able to handle this game well; But the 7800X has achieved better results. This game has no frame rate limit. The 1600 processor is 15% weaker than its competitor. However, after overclocking the processors, this difference is reduced to 6%.
During the Rise of the Tomb Raider test, AMD’s average framerate is 12% slower than the 7800X, while their lowest framerates are identical. After overclocking, the average difference reaches 1.5%; But at least the frame rate of 1600X is about 12% faster than the Intel processor.
In this game, the advantage is also in the hands of the Intel processor, and the 1600 processor lags behind with a small difference in the overclock mode.
Far Cry Primal is one of the games It’s weird, and it’s one of the limited titles that challenged us for early tests with the Ryzen processor. The results for the 1600 and 7800X processors are similar; But it is much lower compared to 7700K. Overall, the performance of both processors is good and never drops below 60 frames per second. This frame rate conveys the experience of a smooth game to the player.
In the Division game, most of the processing load is on cartography; The average frame rate of Ryzen processor is lower than 7800X and 7700K, but their minimum frame rate is almost equal. None of the systems have any problem to reach a frame rate above 100; But if you want such power, your choice cannot be GTX 1070 or lower.
Hitman is a game with a lot of NPCs, which puts a lot of CPU overhead. We have seen this issue in the previous versions of this title. In the tests of this game, 1600 is much lower than 7800X. The same is true for the 7800X and 7700K. Comparing the minimum framerate, the 1600 appeared about 15% weaker than the 7800X. But with overclocking of the processors, this difference reaches zero and both processors output rendered images at a rate of 61 frames per second.
In this game, the AMD processor appeared 13% weaker than its competitor. However, as we have seen before, with the overclocking of the processors, this difference decreases (in this case it reached 4%).
In the game Overwatch we have used a standard option that is a bit dependent on the processor. In this case, the powerful 1600 appeared and for the first time in the overclock mode, it surpassed the Intel processor.
The frame ceiling in this game is equal to 200 and the Ryzen processor was able to reach this value, while the Intel processor It is left behind from the competition and can reach this number only in overclock mode.
In the game Total War: Warhammer, the 1600 processor has performed better than the competitor, and in overclocking mode, their difference reaches 16%. In this game, the 4-core 7700K processor is at the top by a long distance from the other two processors.
Using DirectX 11, the Ryzen processor works 22% faster in overclock mode. Thanks to the greater rendering power of 1080Ti in DirectX 11, we see higher frame rates.
This time the 1600 processor is lower than the 7800X with a difference of 22% in the minimum frame rate. Again, with overclocking, this difference reaches 7%. But if you always want a frame rate above 120, the blue team is the winner and this is where the frame rate limits show their importance.
Again, the 1600 processor is 19% slower, and the 7800X is the winner by a margin. In overclocking mode, this difference is reduced to 6%.
Battlefield 1 is probably one of the most important titles on this list; Where the 1600 processor has been able to keep up with its competitors. After overclocking, the results are very close. Even for gamers who deal with 144 Hz monitors, both processors in this game are able to meet the needs of this group.
This game was initially considered a good title for Ryzen processors; But with each update, the Ryzen processors appeared weaker and the Intel processors appeared more powerful. At some point, the 1600 processor was able to surpass the 7700K; But now it is at the bottom of the table with a distance of 32% (in the minimum frame rate). Even with overclocking, Ryzen’s gap with 7800X reaches 7%. These values are very strange and we have to see what updates have brought to the game that the results are so upside down. Anyway, Mafia 3 is not an optimized game and you can’t count on it too much.
Gears of War 4, like the game Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is one of the series of games where the combination of Ryzen processor with GeForce graphics card will not give good results. This is the only title that only supports DirectX 12. So what it seems is that we have to wait for AMD’s high-end graphics cards.
The game Titanfall 2 has good framing on the tested processors. But considering that the price of Ryzen 6-core processor is about half of Intel’s competitor, it seems to be a more appropriate choice.
Civilization VI supports DirectX 12. But it is compatible with the Ryzen/GeForce bundle, so the Ryzen processor performed better than the 7800X. After overclocking, the distance between the two processors increases.
The game Dishonored has interesting results. In the basic mode, and taking into account the minimum frame rate, the 1600 processor appeared 7% weaker than the Intel competitor; But with the overclocking of the processor, the tip of the scale is heavy towards the AMD processor with a difference of 9%.
In Resident Evil, spaces are not that big. The Ryzen processor is placed lower than the Intel processor, and this gap does not disappear with overclocking, and it increases. In basic mode, the difference between the two processors is 4% and in overclocked mode, it is 6%.
For Honor uses more cartographic resources, so the results are close. The interesting thing to note is that if we consider the minimum frame rate, the 1600 processor in both base and overclocked modes, not only appeared higher than the 7800X, but also surpassed the 7700K processor.
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands, like the previous game, pushes the cartography. Therefore, the two compared processors had similar performance. In this case, the 7700K processor is not far from other processors.
Mass Effect: Andromeda is one of the titles that has been compatible with Ryzen processors since the beginning, and this process after many updates, It still stands. In overclocking mode, the 1600 processor has used more of the 1080Ti’s potential and is on par with other processors.
For Dawn of War III, a new patch was released in July that increased the framerate of the 1080Ti card to 50 Frames per second decreased. To compare the results of 1600 with Intel processors, we had to use the previous version of this game. In this title, the competing processors had similar performance in this competition.
Watch Dogs 2 is incompatible with Ryzen processors, so the 1600 is left out of the competition. In the base frequency, the AMD processor appeared 24% weaker than the competitor. This difference decreases to 9% in overclock mode.
Prey game is not very CPU dependent. Therefore, all three processors 1600, 7800X and 7700K have obtained similar results, especially in overclock mode.
The last game in this list is called DIRT 4. This game shows good performance with Ryzen processors. In the base mode, the 1600 processor managed to surpass the 7800X. In the overclocking mode, the Ryzen processor goes further and equals the 7700K processor.
Seeing such a chart is a bit far-fetched. For years, we were used to the power consumption graphs of the FX series, which were the undisputed leader in power consumption. But now we are happy that AMD was able to break this taboo with its Ryzen processors and erase the memories of the FX series from our minds. In overclocking mode, the difference between the $215 Ryzen 1600 processor and the 7700K is reduced to 6% and equals the $415 7800X processor. By comparing the graph above, the two compared processors have recorded a frame rate of 103 in the minimum frame rate. These results are obtained from the average of 30 games.
The number of games won and lost by each company is equal. Even by removing the games where the difference between winners and losers is large, the final result will not differ much, which is one of the beauties of CPU testing using numerous titles. For example, removing AMD’s worst performance in Gears of War 4, the R5 1600 is only 1% ahead of the 7800X. Even with the removal of the second weakest title of this processor, Deus Ex Mankind Divided (DirectX 12), the difference between Ryzen’s processor and its competitor remains the same as 1%. Also due to the large difference in game performance Deus Ex: Mankind Divided in the two modes of DirectX 11 and 12, we had to count the results of both modes. While in the game Total War: Warhammer, because the results of DirectX 11 and 12 were similar (in both cases the Ryzen processor won by a margin), we only used the results of DirectX 12.
