Google taunts Apple because of the lack of RCS in the iPhone

Last night during the Google I/O 2022 event, Google indirectly criticized Apple for not adding RCS technology to iPhones. RCS is a more modern version of SMS that Google has paid special attention to in recent years, but Apple’s iMessage does not support it.

By 9to5Mac, a Google executive said during the I/O conference that the company hopes all mobile operating systems will be equipped with RCS so that “your messages remain private no matter what device you use.” Mountain View people criticized Apple in a similar way last year because of the lack of RCS in the iPhone.

  • What is RCS messaging and why is it important for Android phones?
  • How to find out if our Android phone supports RCS?

RCS provides significant improvements in messaging by supporting features such as Read Receipt and encryption. In 2011, when iMessage was introduced in iOS 5, Apple introduced similar features in its messaging service, however, iMessage service is exclusive to iPhone and Android users are not allowed to access it.

Messages sent from iPhone to Android (or vice versa) have a green bubble in iMessage.

If Apple hadn’t developed the iMessage service, it would probably have added RCS to messaging on iPhones. Probably the main reason Apple doesn’t use RCS is the decline in iPhone sales.
