Apple will enlist the help of longtime camera module supplier LG Innotek and parts maker Jahwa Electronics for its folding zoom camera modules. This technology creates a periscope-like lens on the iPhone with a smaller camera bump.

According to a report from 9to5mac, Jahwa Electronics appears to be Apple’s Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) used for Periscope-like telephoto lenses are designed in iPhones. Sources close to the matter report that Jahwa Electronics’ optical image stabilization patents are perfect for creating folding zoom technology. This technology led to the development of a periscopic camera system that uses prisms to gather light entering the image sensor. The ability to combine light in this way enables vendors to make smaller camera modules that extend the optical zoom range of the iPhone.

Apple has been meeting with South Korean companies since 2019 to work on its camera modules. The Cupertino company is looking to improve the capabilities of the iPhone’s telephoto lens. According to the published information, it seems that the periscopic lens will be placed on the iPhone 15 in 2023.
